A Spring Song

Spring Song crop

I thought I’d share a card with you today that I created some time ago as a new catty swap for a group of SU demos I was in, that has since disbanded.  This was my entry using a set from what was then the new Stampin’ Up! catalog.

I really love this Spring Song set because the 2 main images are so perfect for watercoloring.  Sadly though, I find myself using my Copic markers more than I use my waterbrush.  Well, maybe not sadly because I do enjoy the Copics trememdously.  But I really love to take my time and just watercolor an image with no thought up front as to how it will work into a card.  Contrarily, that wasn’t the case with this image because when I painted this hummingbird I wanted to use the colors from the Bali Breeze paper for the flowers.

Because I wanted the image to take “center stage”, I used a very simple layout.  I layered 2 different designer patterned papers onto an old olive card base, and stamped the sentiment directly onto the paper.  I matted the painted image onto black cardstock to frame it.  The old olive grosgrain ribbon was tied into a knot on the clip, which was then attached to the image layer with a glue dot.  The image layer is raised on dimensionals.

Have you seen any hummingbirds yet?  I know any of you that live in Florida or other states in the Deep South have, but what about the rest of you?  Seeing that first hummer to me signals the official beginning of Spring.  I always know I will see my first one sometime around April 1st, and this year was no exception.  I hung my feeder out on March 31st and by April 3rd, I had seen my first pair.

Thank you so much for coming by to visit today!  I really do love hearing from you!

Oh Broni, this is gorgeous! I bought that same set with this image in mind but have yet to ink it up! Your coloring is gorgeous and so realistic looking! My in-laws live in the Tucson area and have seen hummingbirds but I don’t ever remember seeing any up her in Michigan. They are so fun to watch…lots of them in Arizona. In Michigan when we see a robin, we now that Spring isn’t far behind.

I just ordered this stamp set and can hardly wait for it to arrive. I can imagine it done in watercolors too. I don`t have copics but I love my prismas so I plan to use them. Great work as usual.

LOVE IT! LOVE IT! We haven’t seen a hummer yet but the feeders are out.

  5. This is just beautiful — the flower colors are so vibrant and I have seen many hummingbirds that look exactly like that! Your coloring is so life-like! Beautifully done!

Very pretty! I love the bold colors…great card!! I don’t think I have ever seen a hummingbird on Long Island although they are supposed to be here. I hung a feeder in my garden last year and have lots of hummer loving plants growing, but alas, nothing. I do however see them frequently at the feeder we put outside the lake house in the Adirondacks (upstate NY). Haven’t been up there yet but we will be opening it up for the summer in the next few weeks so I will be looking for them! Really love your card!

Your coloring is amazing! Those orange flowers are gorgeous!! I hope I see hummingbirds this year. (And no Cardinals!! That dude came back the other day but it must have only been to say hi. He pecked for about half an hour and left. Whew…I thought I was going to have to look for one of those big bobble-head owls for my deck.)
